this poem is for the pillow clutchers/for those looking into the imaginary eyes of the person who fills their mind with sugarplum smiles/for those who have a cannon of dreams ready and waiting to blossom/for the men and the women who want to be understood in that way that only someone who kisses you can understand you/this poem is for you.

this poem is not for the desperate/the pathetic/the lame/the loser/not for the one who hasn’t gotten laid in awhile/not for the one who says they’re “choosing not to date” for awhile/there is no such thing/this poem is for the people who cannot bring themselves to admit that they would give their right leg for any length of time with the person on their mind.

forgive me/I am not a brave woman/I do not know what lurks in the hearts of humans and I don’t really want to know/if what’s there mirrors memories I show in my face on bad days it holds kisses that are long gone/people who have disappeared/and passions that have faded into the ether of the past/nothing lasts/that is the one lesson this coward can say she is able to teach.

this poem is for all those who wish to say “I’m sorry”/I’m sorry I couldn’t love you/you deserve love/I’m sorry I couldn’t give something to you/you deserve to be given to/I’m sorry that for every person that loves somebody/another person just doesn’t want to/and sometimes we’re the lucky ones/right/we get to feel sweet truth in the night/the bodies we reach out to are miraculously there/but I know the despair that comes when they are not/I know the long nights and the doubt and the fear and that crawling back to a womb that just isn’t there/I know intensity’s address and the letdown that rents there/I’m sorry for it/it takes years off your life and it cannot be avoided.

and some times these little words are crutches for the crush that we feel/so this poem is a pathetic vehicle for me to tell you/each one of you/that I love you/in so many ways/in the same ways that stay up nights and days/dreaming up the perfect way to be there for someone/meals you would cook for them/poems you would write for them and the things you plan to say when they say no/well I love you/and you will never know how in the slight of a magician’s hand we could’ve been lovers and grandly in love/could’ve changed the whole game/written words on the horizon/changed the compromise/but you will know something else instead/bitter as bitter ever gets/more bitter than a rotten peach pit/more bitter than a child’s most terrifying nightmare at night/you will know that I don’t reflect what I see in your eyes/will will share some banal recognition/some cordial understanding but have I mentioned that I love you for not lying/so many people lying all the time/I hate them/so I love you/and you will still go home alone/and that is very hard to do.

:DD I accidentally opened my stickies, and lo and behold, I found something to eat up an hour I probably should have dedicated to some furious writing. However, I think that this was a worthy hour, since I got to fix up the list of tracks for one the CDs that I wanted to burn for Mon-lai since, like what, last year? I have all of these half-completed things lying around in stickies or textedit files, and the moment I look at them I start feeling as if the order isn't quite right anymore, or that song's been overplayed by now, & etc.etc. Endless cycle! VICIOUS CYCLE. I never get to send out the discs, so the playlists languish just like all the half-written letters to everyone and just BOOO....this one's pretty cheesy though, i must say.

Anime, Manga, & American Comics--Plus the Value of Fantasy in a Less than Fantastic World

I've been getting into a great number of increasingly hostile arguments with Alex {as in Omidsalar} lately regarding Anime/Manga vs. American Comics. Rather than writing down the actual exchanges to add fuel to the already burning rage, I think instead, I'll just hash out my personal feelings about the mediums in general, because really, Alex pisses me off. To the point where I swear to god I will punch him in the face, even if it's years from now and I'm re-reading the arguments, I will experience an uncontrollable desire to kill. And...so...without further ado, I shall be incredibly serious.

It's not just because of some strange perceived sense of identification with Japanese culture because it's East Asian and I felt/feel overwhelmed by the overwhelming hegemony of Western European culture in most English texts [and etc.]...although that may be a contributing factor. Rather, I imagine that it has more to do with the fact that despite it's exploration of a great many different themes, genres, and alternate universes--anime and manga exist purely in the vacuum of fantasy. Every world that is created by every work is, ultimately [in my estimation at least], largely devoid of the brand of social realism that most American comics in the recent few decades have attempted to capture. And as much as I approve of progressive social messages and critical analysis of race relations in the United States or overwhelming corruption in the American criminal justice system...
if i wanted to be inundated with the problems of the world, the ethical dilemmas of vigilante justice, race tensions, the failings of representative government and the like...I would read a book.
Better yet, I would read the news.
Fights and tights are great, no joke. But, even with these great superhuman powers or being super-loaded [as in the case of Batman and his Marvel counterpart Ironman]...ultimately American comic book superheroes of the crime-fighting variety are made to deal with [and I know I'm generalizing here] their super *in*ability to rid the world of the evils they want to destroy, etc.,etc.,etc....
And so for that reason, I find the focus that manga and anime have on the individual far more appealing. In most manga and anime, the focus seems to ultimately be on the psychological impact of societal pressures on the development of an individual...It's almost always about one person's feelings, one person's alienation...It's always about growing as a person. {evangelion, akira, .hack, lain, etc etc etc and even in the more recent poppy stuff that appeals to teens and younger you have stuff like naruto, kimi ni todoke, and etc}
It's always about how you defeat loneliness, rise up against apathy, and learning how to communicate...
These are examinations [if they can be called that] of the most basic social insecurities that one has as a human being.
Even in stuff that's ridiculous [the harem and hism crap even] they all serve as stand-ins for fantasies for bypassing the difficulties of individual person to person interactions.
It's almost ALWAYS comes down to the basic emotions that drive us as people.
So...that's why i like it.
Because really, at the end of the day, like i said before, if I wanted broader social commentary, I wouldn't be looking to pretty pictures. And that's what i imagine a lot of people think, which is why anime and manga, even if they were to attempt to be more "ambitious" in the same fashion American comics are in their discussion of "grittier" subjects, anime and manga would not be as increasingly popular as they are today in the United States or as prolific as they are in Japan. There is, after all, a reason that American comics have exponentially lower circulation rates today than they did in their heyday.

I also believe that anime and manga still do have some social value precisely because of their focus on individuals. Well executed works [even of the fluff filled sort] manage to inspire a certain growth of positive values, self-confidence and etc...
By placing a value on growth as an individual, they teach an invaluable lesson that I imagine to be the foundation of any progressive movement since at the core of any nation there needs to be individuals that are comfortable with themselves, comfortable with indentifying and then communicating their needs before they can overcome the socially constructed differences between each other.

SIDE NOTE: the art also lends itself to an exploration of gender roles and etc. with gender-bending and gendertwist and so on.

I've seriously dedicated the better parts of my conscious life to these goshdarned two-dimensional things, and I *HATE* being told that I'm wasting my time. I have a lot to be grateful for because I think almost even more than the books and scholarly articles I've read, these terrible terrible creations have influenced the formation of my current character by introducing me to fandom and a great many more things. This actually explains a lot about me as a person though, I expect, for better or for worse. But hey! WE ALL GROW UP AND LOVE THE THINGS WE LOVE, RIGHT?!

I forgot to mention how incredible it was to present for it, and how there was just a wonderful, vindicating rush of relief after having done well.

Practicing in class on the 12th had been god-awful. Everyone was so scared, but somehow, we all managed to pull through even when the coaches pulled all sorts of questions from goodness knows where.

I can't believe how lucky we were to be able to do it one last time and to be able to do it *right*

We're so incredibly lucky to have had that one last chance--everyone else had their last chance at state, and so even if we did do our best, it was a sudden break.

Info Night was simply amazing for me, and I was such a pussy. I started crying after talking about the bonding experience. Thank goodness I had gone back into the gov line already because crying in front of everyone would've been pathetic.

Anyhow. Hanging out afterwards at Denny's was funfunfun too. Pronoy got his shirt unbuttoned and majorly groped by Alex, who also happens to be marrying me. New last name: Co-Omidsalar. D: awkward much?

Also on another subject altogether--I feel better for having tried. I won't have any regrets this way. Things'll work themselves out.

Failing Chem and Considering the Aftermath of GOV

D: OH EM GEE NOESSSS!

It really doesn't feel as if it's only been about two weeks. Actually not even two weeks. It's really only been 11 or 12 days since State, but it still feels longer than that.

I remember thinking that life would absolutely, positively come to a terrible, horrible, no-good, *screeching* halt. After that, there would only be a frightening resolve driving each and every single member of gov to not only move forward, pressing for the creation of better Unit Boxes, better plans of action, and ultimately a Better!Team for the grand, awe-inspiring NEXT YEAR. AND. Even after that, we would all embark on personal missions to, you know, sort of save the world and stuff.

A bit of that FLAMING VIGOR OF YOUTHFUL INDIGNATION AND DISAPPOINTMENT kiiiiind of was snuffed out a bit.

There is still, of course, a gaping void in my life where Gov used to be, but the world didn't quite end in the way I expected it to. Suddenly, I know what's going on in all of the series I chase again, and although time slips out of my grasp for not so legitimate, chaos inducing reasons nowadays, there's an almost, not-quite, but certainly-enough-to-induce-guilt, sense of freedom.

Not because I don't love gov to death!!! Only really, because the school year has in effect ended with state. It's second semester now, and really, nothing presses quite as urgently anymore--not even [ i fear the consequences of admitting it but I must to be completely honest to myself] gov.

There is still of course a deep-rooted desire to MAKE AN EVEN BETTER TEAM TO *CRUSH* ALL OTHERS for next year and of course to PERSONALLY DO MANY GRAND THINGS AS A PART OF A GIANT WAVE OF REFORMERS CRASHING DOWN UPON THIS NATION ALL HELL-BENT ON DOING-GOOD [as quixotic do-gooders such as myself are wont to dream of], but yes. In some ways, my attitude tends to wander somewhere near the doldroms, but in a happy adventure sort of way. Just a CALM BEFORE A WILD HURRICANE OF RAINBOWS
